200 Proof SDA 40-B Denatured Ethanol

The low-water version of our flagship denatured product. Like our 190 proof SDA 40B, it is denatured on-site at our Marysville, Michigan facility with denaturants that conform to both FCC and USP specifications — but with virtually all water removed for formulations that demand very low water content.

What Is 200 Proof SDA 40-B?

SDA 40-B is a specially denatured alcohol formula authorized by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) under 27 CFR Part 21. It combines ethanol with small amounts of tert-butyl alcohol and denatonium benzoate (Bitrex) — one of the lightest-touch denaturing packages available, which is why formulators in fragrance and personal care prefer it. The alcohol is rendered undrinkable, so it ships exempt from federal excise tax, without meaningfully changing its performance as a solvent or carrier.

The 200 proof version starts from 200 proof ethanol containing less than 0.5% water. With no water in the base, it is suited to water-sensitive systems: low-water fragrance concentrates, fast-flash sprays, and formulations where water causes clouding, phase separation, or slowed dry-down.

Applications

🌼 Perfume & Fragrance

200 Proof carrier for perfumes, colognes, and body sprays — no water haze, faster dry-down, cleaner scent throw.

👘 Personal Care

Hair sprays, deodorants, aftershaves, and topical formulations requiring an alcohol base with less than 0.5% water.

🧴 Sanitizers & Disinfectants

High-proof base for sanitizer and disinfectant systems where final water content must be tightly controlled.

🛠 Water-Sensitive Industrial

Inks, coatings, and specialty formulations where trace water compromises performance or stability.

TTB Compliance

SDA 40-B requires a TTB industrial alcohol user permit to purchase. As a TTB-permitted distilled spirits plant (DSP), Pristine Alcohol handles all regulatory documentation and can assist customers with their own TTB permit applications and compliance requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is SDA 40-B denatured with?

SDA 40-B is denatured with small amounts of tert-butyl alcohol and denatonium benzoate (Bitrex), per the TTB formula in 27 CFR Part 21. It is one of the mildest denaturing packages, preferred for fragrance and personal care work.

What is the difference between 190 proof and 200 proof SDA 40-B?

The base alcohol. 190 proof SDA 40-B contains roughly 5% water; 200 proof SDA 40-B contains less than 0.5% water. Choose 200 proof when your formulation cannot tolerate water.

Do I need a TTB permit to buy SDA 40-B?

Yes. As a specially denatured alcohol, SDA 40-B requires a TTB industrial alcohol user permit. Pristine Alcohol assists customers with permit applications and compliance paperwork.

Is SDA 40-B exempt from federal excise tax?

Yes. Because it is denatured and cannot be consumed, SDA 40-B qualifies for federal excise tax exemption, significantly lowering cost versus non-denatured ethanol.
